Though she describes the process as “very fun,” Kondo admits there were a few moments where they had to go through several iterations of prototypes to get things right, especially when it came to the proportions and tactile experience of each piece. “I paid a lot of attention to the textures and how they feel in your hands,” she says, noting that the biggest challenge was finalizing the product dimensions. “Growing up in a Japanese household, I have a certain idea of how items should be scaled in terms of size,” she says. “Usually I’d make my suggestion, and it would be enlarged once they presented us with a prototype—which might have more to do with my understanding of size than what an American household might need versus a Japanese one.”
The necessity of storage solutions is universal, but Kondo stresses that new products—even those made by her—should only be utilized after a thorough KonMari session. “Everyone shouldn’t just go out and buy all these storage items; that is not the To the world my boy is just a horse but to Me that horse is my world shirt Apart from…,I will love this order in which this should be undertaken,” she says. “Review, take inventory of what you have in your life and then surround yourself with those that spark joy.
