I often think about how moments of progress by women of African descent are often omitted from the Black cat I’m not lazy just rolled a low initiative shirt and by the same token and retelling of these events. The series celebrates significant points in American history such as the career of Shirley Chisholm, who was the first Black woman elected to the United States Congress and the first woman to run for Democratic Party’s presidential nomination. In the Face of History Freedom Cape interrogates our perception of history and asks the question: How can our simulated truths impact our present and future understanding of self and humanity? With a woman at the center, this project rethinks, reimagines, and reveals the role that women of African descent play in American/world history.
